Change

I am currently in the U.K.

Normally, that would be pretty cool. It’s a lovely country. But, as is often the case, change is inevitable.

COVID-19 has changed everything.

Ultimately, I am very thankful to be in a situation where I’m not in critical danger. Sure, I’m separated from my family. There are many stressful uncertainties about my return date, and what life will look like even when I do get back. But I’m otherwise fine, living with some relatively minor inconveniences.

I’m choosing to use this time to take all of my personal projects off the proverbial back burner, and into an active state.

One such back burner project was a website redesign for this very blog you’re reading.

I was a freelance composer, musician and guitar teacher for almost 4 years when we lived in Germany. That changed fairly rapidly a few months before returning the U.S. I wasn’t totally prepared for it. In fact, I have a laundry list of unfinished projects that I was really excited to get done, that went into hibernation.

This site had been completely built around that life. I knew I needed to redesign. I didn’t know what the new theme would be.

I stopped freelancing in October of 2018. I didn’t realize it at the time, but there was a small bit of loss that I needed to work through. That was a special season of life, for a variety of professional and personal reasons. When I transitioned back into working for a company again, my brain kept telling me it was a temporary break. As if I would imminently return to that life.

I didn’t.

I may, at some point. And, ironically, I’m temporarily back in that life during quarantine. I don’t expect it to last, but I’m ok with that for now.

We’ll see how deeply and permanently the pandemic affects our society.

But one small victory of this quarantine is that I’ve had time to think. I’ve been thinking specifically about change, and how it is often the best catalyst for growth.

To reflect some of the ideas that I’m working through, I decided that one of the best ways to redesign the website was to totally strip it down, and focus on one thing:

That starts right here. I’m going to start putting the majority of my output here on my website.
